Hi Jim,
   
  Since the center electrode is the cathode, I  would wrap it with a piece of 
white paper table napkin and hold it in place with a couple of pieces of 
plastic coated twistems.
   
  When the brew is finish just slide off the paper and things are clean and no 
sparklies.
  Works well for me !

electrodes; one central electrode, and 8 evenly spaced around it?  I do not 
know the pulse sequence or timing, but alternating electrodes in the circle 
remains bright, as does the center one.
