If it didn't go futt two minutes after you wrote that (which is 
usually Sod's Law), then I think what was happening was that SIMS was 
opening a very large account file like that 117MB one to append more 
mail to it, but because of its size it takes a few seconds to open 
and was locking up (hogging) the machine during that time. On a busy 
machine SIMS (and probably other stuff like any DNS or web services) 
is receiving continuous connection requests which are queuing up and 
crashing TCP/IP. I think.
