It's been quite a while since I last used MacDNS, so I could easily be
mistaken, but I could have sworn that it doesn't do reverse DNS. Getting
reverse info from existing 'forward' entries would be unreliable at best -- if
you've got multiple A records pointing to the same IP address (a fairly common
occurence), which name do you use for the address's reverse?

That certainly may be a part of the problem. The real problem is that he needs
to find out who does have authority for the reverse zone and either get them
to add the necessary records to their name servers or to delegate authority
for the zone to his name server so that he can add the records himself. Since
he's using MacDNS, the former option is probably the better one.

To test it, query your name server non-recursively for a PTR record for one of
your addresses.
