While it seems to work for names with single A records (see below), I have
no idea how it would handle multiple A records. It's covered in the
documentation, but I don't have that here.

I totally agree. I use MacDNS for non-critical DNS and my ISP handles
backups on multiple servers. When we handled it at my last company, we used
QuickDNSPro, which was much more robust, if a bit more complicated to use.
