IIRC, 1.8b9d14 has a few minor bug fixes and one or two minor feature
additions (not the least of which is a very nice router test function in
the web admin interface). It's been around for a couple of years now and
has been proven solid by users on this list.

Opinions vary, check the list archive. I'm currently getting good results
from:
cbl.abuseat.org
blackholes.easynet.nl
opm.blitzed.org
sbl.spamhaus.org
plus a mix of country-specific lists from blacholes.us (cn-kr, brazil,
taiwan, etc.).

To a large extent they will. However, keep in mind that RBLs operate a step
behind the spammers -- for the most part an open relay or open proxy must
actually be exploited before the RBLs (at least the ethical ones) will list
it. When one hole gets plugged, the spammers move on to the next, and on it
goes...

Absolutely. The more ways to check connections, the better. SIMS checks its
internal blacklist before it does RBL checks, which can speed things along.
In addition to the RBLs, I have a couple of hundred or so entries in my
local blacklist, mostly made up of addresses from spam that got through the
other defenses.
