On my Linksys phones I got MWI working by putting in the sip address of the phone where it asks for the voicemail server, such as [email protected] I used the fully qualifed domain name instead of the IP address since I have DNS servers on my campus and SipX seems to prefer DNS over IP entries. The phone also has an ON/OFF selection in the settings for message waiting, but enabling it simply turned on the MWI lamp permanently, so I leave that disabled. I never had to do a thing to the server itself, other than making sure the user has the correct voicemail settings added.
