A lot of this has already been discussed in the original JIRA:
http://track.sipfoundry.org/browse/XX-8645

1. sipx should configure and load mod_spandsp (it also affects codecs
support in general) for normal operation.
2. sipxconfig should allow more than JUST numeric characters as the
alias for fax extension. If coming on siptrunk, some carriers may send
more than just numbers (i.e. +19995551212 instead of 19995551212,
9995551212 or 5551212).
3. Can the proxy/media server be enabled in a way to auto detect a fax
if the fax is sent to the user (i.e., someone dials 200 from an
internal fax machine connected via ATA that supports t.38, user 200 is
a softphone, therefore the call goes to VM. Vm server IS what receives
faxes also. If there is a phone registered, an the proxy detect that
it is a fax and autp send it to the users fax account?).
4. TIFF makes sense (multipage image) for faxes. Does it also make
sense to allow the user to choose something else, like PDF?
5. Does it make sense to allow user to upload files to send out via
fax and harness the system address book to find already stored fax
numbers or allow them to input a fax number? if so, what about cover
sheet support?
6. In system preferences, there should be two ranges (users extension,
like 200-299, and fax ranges like 300-399). When creating a user it
should also pre-populate the next available extension from the fax
range and allow it to be edited during creation.
7. user should be allowed to download//view faxes in sipxconfig UI.
8. user should be allowed to be alerted if fax is received by IM (MyBuddy).
9. User should be able to audibly hear about faxes in IVR when
checking voicemail, etc.

As you can see the original objective was to be able to support
inbound faxes, which is done. PDF support is coming by way of a patch
soon. Items 5-9 were not yet implemented, and there is also the added
item of a SMB connector that is being discussed in this thread. This
means there are "5" additional features or enhancements possible,

Obviously another JIRA would need to be created before each item is
worked. Example:

 http://track.sipfoundry.org/browse/XX-9772
 http://track.sipfoundry.org/browse/XX-9776
http://track.sipfoundry.org/browse/XX-9260

So rather than re-discuss it, let's work with what we already know and
maybe someone wants to make a feature request/enhancement (keeping the
above unworked items in mind) to get them added to the JIRA and
tracked? It would be something that needs discussion (perhaps per
item) because t.38 might not be available on every gateway, so in the
outbound fax setup the admin might have to select only the gateway(s)
that are t.38 compatible for sending faxes, etc.

We already know FS can do outbound faxing via t.38, but we do need to
be able to provide a centralized method in sipxecs to control that.
(i.e. permissions, etc.).
