Remember when you say "remote" that they are not "remote" if they are routed with no NAT (direct connection or ipsec).
MWI subscribe requires proper lookup of SRV records. I trust you are letting sipx configure the devices and haven't had a prior config? If so, wipe the local config from the phone...
