After a bit more testing, it's now clear to me that FolderShare synchronization software doesn't see any modifications (even though Finder does) when notes are saved to the extended attributes of a pdf file.
This is the only explanation I can think of for the fact that my .skim files are quickly synched from one machine to another after each Save in Skim, but the .pdf never is. I'm taking other precautions, so I know I'm not losing anything to the ignorance of the synch software. But would it be possible to have Skim change some additional modification flag on the .pdf file when new notes are save to it? Apparently not all software can detect that changes have occurred.
