(I had asked, yes.)  Alex Hamann solved the problem for me.  It turns
out that when I had customised the Skim Sync settings to use the
emacsclient in the Aquamacs application, I had unwittingly escaped the
space in the path: /Applications/Aquamacs\ Emacs.app/...  Unscaping
the space solves the problem.
