It makes complete sense to me to switch apps during presentations. I can switch to VLC to show a movie, or to the Terminal to make a demo. This is vital for me.

Apple's own idea of presentation mode is really unsatisfactory (they mostly think about people showing their photos to their friends, I suppose), and that is why I use skim in the first place.

Would you consider adding a preference (possibly a hidden one) to allow the switching to other apps in presentation mode?

No

I am not completely illiterate in cocoa programming so I might help if you point me to the right direction (and agree with such a change).

Thank you!

I already said that this discussion is really irrelevant, because it cannot be reasonably done. Switching apps in presentation modes gives unacceptable problems. Period.

I see. Would you mind sharing your knowledge about why it cannot be reasonably done? And what precisely were the problems caused by switching apps before version 1.2.2? I have never experienced any problem at all with skim and app switching myself...

I said so already: the presentation window covers other windows because it's at a higher level, also when it's not active. If you haven't seen that, it's just a coincidence.

For the moment I will just try to compile a pre-1.2.2 version and use that instead of the last version. I really cannot use Skim in its present state for my teaching.

Thank you,

For teaching you may choose to use the Full Screen mode as well, which does allow app and window switching. I know others are doing that. It's one reason why Skim has two different full screen modes in the first place. You could easily modify the (default) view settings to match the presentation mode more closely.

It was deliberately disabled in the last release (1.2.2) because it
led to unacceptable situations, like complete loss of control of
anything you see. Unfortunately Apple does not give us sufficient
control to make app switching in presentation mode feasible. Also, it
really makes no sense to switch apps during a presentation mode, I
consider that hackish. Also Apple generally disables app switching and
window switching in presentation modes.
