Hi Alejandro,
thanks for your advice. I already managed to do it after Christiaans posting.

Using SKIM is no issue of making up my mind. I used it because it has a lot of advantages over Acrobat. But right now more often than not it opens a pdf-files as described with a gray empty page, page counter at the last page and scrolling backward is not possible. I have to select the pdf with the FINDER again and open it explicitly with the Acrobat reader. So I prefer to open it by default with the Acrobat reader and only if I have to mark something or put in notes I try to open it with SKIM.
I can't see no scheme behind SKIM's behavior.
Maybe it's my system as Christiaan assumed. But it nover happened with the old version.
I will try it with the next version of SKIM again.
Thanks so far.

Hello Herbert,

To select the program which opens PDFs by default you have to select a PDF file and seconary-click to "Get more info" (I'm translating from Spanish what I get, so it may be different). There go to "Open with" and select Abode Reader or whatever program you want to use to open the PDFs. The last step is to click the button in that section "Change everything", that will change the default application for all the PDFs, not only the one you selected previously.

I hope you find this useful and that you change your mind again soon and start using Skim :-)

Hi Cristiaan,

since the problem persists and I don't know if and when you can repair it I want to declare Adobe Reader to my "standard" program for pdf-files again.
I don't remember where to do it.
Could you please give my the procedure to declare Adobe reader instead of Skim to my default/standard opening program for pdf-files.

Hi Christiaan,

Huh? So what did you do with Acrobat, did you save or anything? What actually changed to the file?

No. As far as I know my Acrobat is a Reader only.

I tried to reproduce this effect and didn't succeed at first. That means, the new SKIM did open pdf's correctly. Up till a certain time (or whatever): now SKIm gives me that gray page again. Even with pdf's which I opened correctly with SKIM a minute ago.

Launch Console.app (in /Applications/Utilities), select the Console Messages in the LHS pane and look for messages from Skim.

In my Console messages I don't see anything remotely like "LHS".

LHS = Left Hand Side (standard acronym)

But in the "system.log" There is this (I guess the time is not Greenwich time) concerning SKIM (I just copy the end of this log)

Does that indicate something?

This points to some problem. I've seen It's really a (long time) system bug in that was (finally) fixed in Snow Leopard. I hoped a workaround I added in the latest release would fix this, but the system bug seems to be even more serious than I thought. Though I am not sure what exactly triggers it in Skim, and I don't have a machine running Leopard anymore to debug.

Hi Christiaan,

So you're saying that it now works OK?

No, it only works OK for every dataset after that very dataset has been once opened by Acrobat Reader.
After that Skim also opens correctly with the first page.

Huh? So what did you do with Acrobat, did you save or anything? What actually changed to the file?

Is there anything relevant in the Console logs?

I'm not acquainted with that,

Launch Console.app (in /Applications/Utilities), select the Console Messages in the LHS pane and look for messages from Skim.

And what's your system?

Mac OS X 10.5.8

Did 1.3.6 work OK? Did the PDF have any notes attached?

Christiaan

Hi,

I've just installed SKIM 1.3.7 (55) and now I get a gray blank page when I open a pdf. The page counter above is at the last page. But when I go the last but 1 page (and so on) I only get gray pages all the time.
Opening the same pdf with Adobe works normally.
After I did this the very same pdf also works with SKIM normally.
What am I doing wrong?

You're probably doing nothing wrong, but I cannot say what goes wrong. So you're saying that it now works OK? Is there anything relevant in the Console logs? And what's your system?
