Not only that...we as an industry have to stop thinking that the
Internet and especially streamimg media will be "the medium of the
future" and the "big money maker". Like so many "new" techniques that
allso where hailed as "the medium of the future" there will not be a
replacement of "older" media like movies, radio, tv, newspapers
etc. etc. at least not for a while (lets say 20/30 years?) Time and
time again "philosophers" predicted the "death of the book"...did it
happen? Think not, book sales are soaring. "TV is the death of the
cinema", did it happen? Think not,theatre visits soar (at least in my country
more people visit the theatres now then ever
before!) etc. etc. etc.
We have to realize the Internet streaming business will just be
another means of distributing content...the major advantages lie in
narrowcast "watch when YOU want it" possibilities, in more
interactivity between customer and content "YOU control it" and
allso between customers themselves (eg.take a look at Jamby for
instance, Adam Curry's -remember him, he's a former MTV VJ-
peer-to-peer audio and video file sharing app.).

Joey is right, forget the masses, target small audiences, use
streaming for family fun stuff (videoletters, video postcards
etc. etc.), add more interactivity, concentrate your efforts on
multi-media (text, audio and video all put together, hence support and
use SMIL), do NOT try to be another TV station (it won't work),
do NOT try and compete with BlockBuster (you will never be able to
compete with their rates, they allready have a massmarket and
are a far better distribution channel for movies) give people a chance
to stream their own content, embrace artistic individuals and nerds
(they will be the first to use your service), give content away for
free (screw SDMI and DRM!).
<guru mode off>
Thats for my 2 cents, but hey I am not a marketing droid just a nerd
that plays with videostreaming and conferencing, what do I know about
making money anyway.
Maybe the only way to make big bucks is hosting and streaming porn,
lots of porn (you can be sure you'll have a captive mass audience
worldwide that is actually willing to pay at least $20 a month
for content). Pretty sad isn't it, that innovation starts with
private parts.

Mark
