The ground does not show in polar (equatorial) mode. Click the icon in the
middle of the right toolbar that has the two blue arrows on it to toggle from
polar to alt-az ("zenithal") mode.
Look an the very top of the screen where it shows your location and date/time.
Somewhere in that line will be the letters "EQ", for equatorial/polar, or "HZ"
for alt-az/zenithal.
Also, at the bottom of the chart appearance window (preferences>chart
appearance), if you select black for the ground color, and click "invisible",
the ground will disappear and the stars will show below the horizon, even in
alt-az mode.
