Using Ubuntu 6.10

I cannot see any thing on the menu bar. If I position the mouse
pointer roughly near the left end, a "menu" pops up, but there is
nothing in it. Sometimes it's a tiny strip, or just arrows; there is
one point where I see a Crtl+l. 

If you want, I can get some screenshots.
