You have the chance Ubuntu is the primary system I use for the 
development. The program is then ported to rpm, windows, etc...

Which X11 driver do you use? I have the same kind of problem with the 
nvidia driver "nv". But no problem with generic "vesa" or the 
proprietary "nvidia". On another computer it work fine with the "ati" 
driver.

This is the right method but prefer another mirror than osdn because 
this primary mirror is not intended for user download. I suppose this is 
why it can be very slow.
Prefer something like:
deb http://kent.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/ skychart/
