This may be a fonts problem.

Read the last entry of the page

To install and run switch type:

sudo apt-get install gtk-theme-switch
switch
Click the button on the right, check "Use font", click "Browse" button 
to select a font, click "Apply"

Be sure you use the generated configuration file:
export GTK_RC_FILES=~/.gtkrc
