I think that means you have text chats popping up in your absence. Those pop-ups can be turned off in Options, under Chat or Chat Appearance (I forget which). The pop-ups only occur in Compact view, so if you use Default view, that will stop the pop-ups as well. Personally, I like the pop-ups, because I'm more sure to notice a text chat that way.
