Dear Doug,
there is something confusing in Skype 4. They implemented two features which
are very similar. One is called categories and one is called groups. I didn't
find anything explaining the difference between these two things in Skype help.
Nevertheless, in both cases you have to create a group or a category before you
can use one of them.
In a contacts context menu, there is an ad to category button you can click on
if at least one category exists, and also a remove from category button which
is of course greyed out if your contact is not already in one category.
Groups are found in the contact menu but you have to create a group first. I
don't remember at this moment how to drag contacts into a group, I'll have to
check that later.
But most of all, I just don't understand why these two things were not melt
into one.
Cheers,
JPR

I thought I asked and got an answer to this, but I can't find the
  message if so...

I'm not sure how you're getting contact categories or groups to show
up in your contact list. I see options under a Categories submenu of
the Contacts menu that allow you to change which category is shown,
but I see no option for putting all of the categories into the contact
list at once. I have "Show all categories" checked, and I normally
hide contacts that are offline and offline with call forwarding, and I
  have contacts sorted by status.

If you could tell me how to enable the whole set of categories at
once, or perhaps explain what I'm trying to do wrong, that would be
  helpful.
