Wow! this is obviously a flash point subject even in the blind community itself! I've always tried to look within my own resources before asking for help about anything I've ever needed to do all my life. I have always been reluctant to become an overly aggressive activist, but I do have to say I do admire the in your face kinda activism of the "Deaf community" who don't find the cliche "deaf living in a hearing world" as acceptable any longer. Maybe it's time for the blind community to adopt some of the mindset of our deaf brothers and sisters. Just my thought after 60 plus years of being blind and self employed and having to pretty much go it on my own without much formal agency support because some well meaning sighted person didn't think I should choose my own career path.
Life truly is an adventure,
Mike from SC

Sometimes, it’s not always possible to create our own workarounds. Afterall, we’re not technical buffs. Well, at least not all of us anyway. Most of us are happy if we can sit down at our computers at work, school or play, turn them on, log in if necessary, and overall just have the darn thing work the way it’s supposed to.I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the big wigs in corporate America just don’t give afill in the blank. They don’t need to worry about things being accessible like we do, so they feel they can do what they want and get away with it. Just my two sence worth.

I’m probably going to rattle a few cages here, but I think we as blind people should stop thinking that big companies like Microsoft should always consider us when upgrading their products.

The fact is that we are a small portion of their market, and while I am against discrimination of any kind, I also believe that we as blind users should develop our own workarounds when things do not work like we were used to or seem inaccessible. I remember many years ago when a friend of mine (who is also blind) started teaching me to use a computer. During the very first “lesson”, he said to me: “It’s a sighted world out there my friend.” Perhaps all of us would do well to remember that.

Hi Denise,
First may I say I'm new to the group so if I'm sending this message the wrong way please forgive me.
But I do agree with you.
I was very happily using Jaws 14 and It was working just fine with all my other programs until last week when Skype upgraded and I couldn't get it to work for me. I was told to upgrade to Jaws 16 which I did do and now my older reliable software that I have used for years isn't working right either.
This is interfering with my ability to get my paying work done.
How do I get an older version of Skype back on my machine?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated,
thanks,
Mike

you know what folks. I really think someone needs to start a petition going
around for all of us to sign onto and give Microsoft bad publicity for
pulling the rug out from under applications that make skype more accessible
for people who are blind. They are a large enough company that they could
continue to support two versions. It wouldn't hurt them financially at all.
I'm getting really sick of this. First it was GW Connect and now skype
taking and we all have to be careful not to ungrade or we have to go through
the whole process of uninstalling and reinstalling a previous version. Why
should we have to jump through such hoops all the time. And if not for
Doug it would be even worse.

It still works but not with the newest version of skype.
Not sure what will hapen in the future.
I need it for work and other things I am doing so I reverted back to an
earlier version of skype.
I could also use a sound editor but I don't want to use it for everything
when recording.
