When we start thinking too much like that, then we allow accessibility to be upgraded right out of technology.
When I was a counselor at a university, all computer and high tech equipment was routinely upgraded for the general student population, but over 10 years had gone by with nothing happening for the disabled students. in the 12th year, Myself and 100 disabled students along with disability support services representatives had a meeting with the university reps, which finally ended with the university upgrading the computers/accessibility software and technology lab so disabled students didn't continuously fall behind. do you remember when we were being left out of the cell phone boom of advances? phone companies and manufacturers screamed bloody murder about making the phones accessible for the blind. the thing is, if we keep quiet because this is a sighted world, then we will really at some point be left out. We have what we have because people with disabilities along with people in the abled bodied world continue to raise a voice. Subject: Re: [Skypeenglish] a new way to record Skype calls that's accessible I'm probably going to rattle a few cages here, but I think we as blind people should stop thinking that big companies like Microsoft should always consider us when upgrading their products. The fact is that we are a small portion of their market, and while I am against discrimination of any kind, I also believe that we as blind users should develop our own workarounds when things do not work like we were used to or seem inaccessible. I remember many years ago when a friend of mine (who is also blind) started teaching me to use a computer. During the very first "lesson", he said to me: "It's a sighted world out there my friend." Perhaps all of us would do well to remember that. Subject: Re: [Skypeenglish] a new way to record Skype calls that's accessible Hi Denise, First may I say I'm new to the group so if I'm sending this message the wrong way please forgive me. But I do agree with you. I was very happily using Jaws 14 and It was working just fine with all my other programs until last week when Skype upgraded and I couldn't get it to work for me. I was told to upgrade to Jaws 16 which I did do and now my older reliable software that I have used for years isn't working right either. This is interfering with my ability to get my paying work done. How do I get an older version of Skype back on my machine? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Mike At 11:24 PM 12/10/2014, you wrote: you know what folks. I really think someone needs to start a petition going around for all of us to sign onto and give Microsoft bad publicity for pulling the rug out from under applications that make skype more accessible for people who are blind. They are a large enough company that they could continue to support two versions. It wouldn't hurt them financially at all. I'm getting really sick of this. First it was GW Connect and now skype taking and we all have to be careful not to ungrade or we have to go through the whole process of uninstalling and reinstalling a previous version. Why should we have to jump through such hoops all the time. And if not for Doug it would be even worse. Not sure what will hapen in the future. I need it for work and other things I am doing so I reverted back to an earlier version of skype. I could also use a sound editor but I don't want to use it for everything when recording.
