For what it's worth, here are my observations regarding Windows
keystrokes for controlling tasks:
All of the following have worked for me through Windows XP, Vista, 7,
8, and 8.1, and possibly even farther back:
Ctrl+Shift+Escape: Open the Windows Task Manager.
Alt+Escape: Cycle through tasks in a defined order.
Alt+Tab: Cycle among tasks giving preference to most recent.
In the Task Manager, what Alt+E does depends on Windows version and
which tab you're in:
Tasks tab in Windows XP, Vista, and 7: Ends a task, possibly without
prompting first.
Processes tab in Windows XP, Vista, and 7: Offers to end the
highlighted process but prompts first.
Processes tab in Windows 8.1 (and probably 8): Ends the highlighted
item without prompting first.

action with a first time try
I guess that skype is just one of those programs that will hold on for
dear life against anyone trying to close it! LOL

Hi mike
If you open task manager and you only have one application open, and
jaws isn't showing this as highlighted, all you have to do is down
arrow.
Once you have done that, alt e should suffice.

Hello all,
yes what Steve just said is the way I have been closing skype for
months now since none of the other ways ever closed it completely and
there were times it was messing up jaws when trying to work with other
apps that were also screen hogs.
but I would like to add the following comments also:
the entire process of closing it through task manager with the control
alt dell key in windows 7 is a slow process to even get it to open
as a blind user you must wait it's not a fast process for things to
open and offer you your next step.
once in the programs tab of the task manager arrow down to the skype
line:
also be sure the skype line is highlighted, sometimes if it's the only
program running it isn't highlighted
also know the entire process is slower than if skype is one of several
things in the task manager menu for you to choose to close??? don't ask
me why it's just that way for some reason!
my simple fix for that is to open something else before I try to close
skype, I just will not be denied!! LOL
Alt e is the short cut key for getting it to close but again it's a
slow slow slow process to get a response
you may have to do it more than once because other screens open that
don't speak all the time and you could be sitting there waiting for
some kind of notice which you will never get because it's already
happened, like the prompt asking you if you want to end skype
I found that using alt tab to come back to the task manager helps but
also so does jaws key escape for refresh screen help also
then I hit the alt e again
and then alt tab to see if skype has closed
it's all rather tedious but I haven't found a faster way yet so I'm
open to suggestions for sure!! LOL
