region 0 disks == region free disks
(ie., can be played on players for region 1..6).

ADVANCED REGION PROTECTION
There are an increasing number of DVD discs appearing on the market,
which implement a new, "advanced" form of region code protection.
These discs identify themselves as being "region-free" (region 0),
allowing any DVD video player (even without an upgrade) to commence
playback. The coding on the disc, which is normally used to control on-screen
menu access for scene selection, then takes over and performs a check of the
DVD video player's region code itself - essentially, instead of the player
checking the disc's code, the disc is checking the player's code.
In situations where these discs are used on players outside of the discs'
originating region, a "region mismatch" will occur, inhibiting playback.
Even though a DVD video player may have been upgraded to automatically
conform to region coding on any DVD disc, it is "tricked" into identifying
itself to the programme contained on the DVD disc, which in turn inhibits
playback. The only option available to overcome situations like this, is to
incorporate "manual" region selection into the DVD video player, which
allows it to be set up as a region-specific player for any region. With
manual region selection available, the operator can set the player's region
code to "region 1" prior to inserting a region-1 disc, and the disc's internal
programme will accept the player as being valid for its region.
