the stylus colour 700 is _not_ one of those that only work under
M$. I have one (and checked it all out at the time) and it works
fine. I even emailed epson tech support to ask about support under
unix, that was quite a laugh.

sounds similar to what my chick wants to do, except we bought
the printer first and are about to buy the scanner probably this
weekend (an Agfa 1236s most likely BTW).

when we looked at printers (a while ago, maybe up to 1 year) the
epson stylus colour 700 was easily the best one for photo quality.

I can't tell you much about it though cos we print photos under
lose95 - it's noticeably better printout quality than under linux.
That could possibly be improved though, I just set it up under
RedHat printtool and haven't tweaked anything at all. It prints
(colour and B&W) fine under netscape, wordperfect, xv etc etc under
linux (and from solaris too remote printing to the linux box) it's
just that for photo quality lose95 turns out better. I haven't got
it working under samba yet so we just pull the plug and plug it
into my chick's lose95 PC when we want to print photos.
