No they can't - it is a proprietry format.  They do put the source for an
extract utility in the first few blocks of every tape but I have found
this to be *very* flakey.

With Arkeia - if you lose the tape database, you can't restore.  You need
to process every tape to rebuild the database BEFORE you can restore.  So
in our case - if we had a disaster we had several days of recovering the
database BEFORE we could recover our systems.

Not good at all.
