My first interest in lunix was as *nix system to keep my skills up and
as a replacement for minix.

Well, a whole pile of jobs on Jobnet are now specifying linux, but it
is often hard to see how it relates to the overall position. Seems to
be flavour of the month, So, it is a good skill to have, amongst a
whole pile of others.

There are a few pure linux based jobs out there, but they naturally go
to the "best". So it is a competitive market. Subs to the job list at
http://www.linux.org.au to get an idea of these. This will tell you
what skills are in demand.

Really, linux is just another tool for solving "business" problems. It
is just that it solves so many, for so little money, and has the best
support, that makes it generally the best OS/tool around {:-).

I use it heavily at home because it is so reliable. I shudder to think
whatit would be like supporting 16 MS systems at home.
