you're using the alsa module?
(i'm just using standard kernel module: maestro.o)

apparently i have a:
Multimedia audio controller: ESS Technology ES1978 Maestro 2E (rev 10)
i just have this line in /etc/modutils/mine:
alias sound-slot-0 maestro
(and then rerun update-modules, etc)
