Absolutely - I would love to have wider and more active things going on with
SLUG. Little workshops, hackfests, those sorts of things. I was speaking to
Marc Merlin (one of the BALUG organisers), and was impressed with the
casualness of their organisation... It helps when you have that many geeks
at your doorstep though. ;) [ SVLUG run an installfest every couple of
weeks! ]
One of the troubles we have here is sparsity - it's really hard to find a
good place that everyone can get to, that doesn't cost anything, and that is
fairly readily available. Another is manpower; we just don't have enough
people willing to jump in and kick arse.
Admittedly, the committee has been pretty hopeless over the last few months
- most of us can plead linux.conf.au though, which I think is an okay
excuse. ;) [ We also have the small problem of a missing treasurer and no
access to bank accounts, etc. Argh! ]
Most of the things that we do *don't* require massive commitment; the big
installfests require a bit of toing and froing, but only to make sure stuff
is done. Most things just fall into place.
First thing we're doing this year is a CodeFest in mid/early March. Conrad
and Jamie have been keen beans for something like this for a while; rightly
so - SLUG (how shall I say it?) does more support than development these
days. ;)
Then I'll be putting some time into (the so far unannounced) Installfest
2001, which will most probably be held in late August. That leaves a fair
few months for SLUG craziness in between -> spam the committee or discuss
stuff you'd like to see happen here.
