The s3 verge is supported, if you look at the supported hardware at Suse.
Try searching google.com for answers as I haven't installed Suse.
Can you skip this part and use a generic driver to install and run
xf86config to setup the driver for X?

Your friend is an idiot. The software on the DVD is exactly the same as
the software in the CD's.

Instead of buying a DVD, but a supported video card - see the list in the
documentation.
