Don't use software RAID
If it's performance you want, you need hardware RAID
If it is hot plug redundancy or server uptime (ie tolerance to disk
failure), you need hardware RAID
Sorry, this seems a terse reply, but after years in the integration game, I
could boil my experiences down to those three rules.
The only time I would use software RAID is where you want to save buying a
larger disk and join two smaller disk (partitions) together to make a larger
logical partition (say for a samba server)
