Partly True.

It depends on your definition of server. If you're deploying a webserver
somewhere to host something and the box has to be up 24x7 then yes you
want hardware raid. Because A there's less hassle and yes performance is
better. But don't forget hardware RAID doesn't mean hotswap unless you
shell out big bucks.
If on the other hand by server you mean a linux box that's sitting on the
end of an ADSL connection and supplys connectivity/email for your
office then software RAID 1 is definetly the way to go. It's cheap and
it doesn't hurt when you lose a disk.
