I have been using both, hardware and software, for years (windows and Linux), 
but software RAID is getting a little underpowered. Your CPU and drive
controller need to do a fair amount of work to do it if you use software
RAID. If you use hardware RAID the data is written ONCE to the controller
and the CPU of the controllers board will do the rest (same if one
of the drive fails, you will not know other than you receive an email and
you logs have some entries).

If you want performance go for Hardware Raid (Mylex DAC960 are part of
the kernel, just stick the card in and it works).

If you want a cheap solution go for software RAID.

PS: IMHO I wouldnt recommend the software solution in a
    business environement.
