I've been using window maker with gnome lately, and both of these provide a
way to do this.

What I've done is the following:

- From Window Maker's configurator, set up my virtual desktops ("workspaces"
  in window maker talk) etc.
- Got my xterms in order and mozilla running on a seperate workspace, as
  desired, renaming workspaces accordingly.
- from the right-click window maker menu, hit WorkSpace->Save Session.
- right-clicking on the title bar of mozilla, select attributes, and select
the third item under Window Specification Mozilla-bin with a capital iirc,
then select full screen maximization, and select the desired Initial
Workspace. Apply, and save. Unfortunately the Start Maximized option
will maximize all dialogs as well, which gets kinda annoying. Anyone know
  a fix/workaround for this?
- log out and log in to make sure it's all good.

This should give you a "mozilla workspace" which alt-<number> should get you
too with a full-screen mozilla waiting for you!

If you don't run Window Maker, put it in your gnome-session through the
control centre. Your window manager might be able to make it run on a
particular desktop, or start minimized or whatever.

Lastly, if you don't run gnome, put it in your .Xsession.
