Don't know if this works on debian, but 'mouseconfig' might be the go.

Look, Debian is a fine distribution provided you've got some linux 
experience. Otherwise I'd start with the likes of Mandrake/Suse/RedHat. If 
you've got old hardware (more than 3 yrs old?) I'd leave Mandrake off that 
list.
