this is just a rough guess but i think it might help you...
i'm guessing your using Xfree86 version 4 (so your config file should be
something like /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (this might be wrong because I'm using
Mandrake 8, i dont know where Debian keeps its XF86Config-4)).

open that file with your favorite editor (i like to use vi so i'd type vi
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4), i should remind you that you'll probably need to be
logged in as root before you can make any changes to this file.

once you open it search for a section called "InputDevice" (press
/InputDevice then press enter)

You might see something like this:

Section "InputDevice"
       Identifier "Mouse1"
       Driver "mouse"
       Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
       Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
       Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

if you have a Microshaft Intellimouse then for the Option "Protocol" you
should change "PS/2" to "IMPS/2"

I hope this gives you a bit of an idea.

to edit anything, press i (it should then say ---INSERT---), when your done
press [ESC]
to save what you've done press :w
to quit out of vi without saving what you've done :q!
or to quit out of vi normally press :q

HELP

only brand new to linux and have had some minor dramas with
installing....

mainly problems with x

how can I reconfigure my mouse only, without reinstall
when I
' startx ' at console prompt it returns an error, cannot find mouse...

major problem as I'm not real experienced with command line stuff and
frustration is starting to set in, as this was my third install
attempt..
(and still only this far)
I thought I had the modules sorted (but maybe not)

its a PS/2 mouse and was configured using that option..
(opt4 which was recommended by install process)

its the Dedian GNU/Linux 2.2r2
with the APC advanced pocketbook (3rd ed.) It assumes I already know
linux
and doesn't offer too many install tips (it says to ask you)
and I haven't been able to get a hold of the earlier copies of this
releas

assume I'm not real bright
anything will help
Thank You
