Oh - that's kind of a hard version of linux to start with.  I
recommend you try with Redhat or Mandrake linux first. You can order
install media only copies for about $20 from www.everythinglinux.com.au.

There are distinct advantages to using Debian but these aren't likely to
be apparent to a beginer and the install process with the alternatives I
mention is much easier. In fact they aren't obvious to me and I continue
to happily use Redhat after 4 years. (admittedly it's only been my
exclusive desktop OS since I bought vmware a few months back and can now
run win32 accounting apps without a rebot)
