This version uses /usr/local/news and inn.conf is correct. I've also
checked that nothing contains /var/lib/news/

This is all fine, but it just doesn't work, (mutter mutter)e.g.

sh-2.04$ tail news.notice

May 30 14:22:49 owl innd: SERVER descriptors 1024
May 30 14:22:49 owl innd: SERVER outgoing 1011
May 30 14:22:49 owl innd: SERVER cant dbzinit /usr/local/news/db/history
No such file or directory

sh-2.04$ cd ../db
sh-2.04$ lm
-rw-rw-r-- 1 news news 261 May 29 16:58 active
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 225 May 29 15:54 active.orig
-rw-r--r-- 1 news news 0 May 29 14:46 active.times
-rw-rw-r-- 1 news news 0 May 30 14:22 history
-rw-r--r-- 1 news news 333 May 29 14:45 newsgroups
sh-2.04$ pwd
/usr/local/news/db
sh-2.04$

I see a history in the correct sub-dir, but innd and other stuff
produces the above error message. This error occurs with both history
and history.* file present i.e flat files and database version.

At this stage, I'm thinking "hidden character error" is the only
explanation and to blow it away and recompile.
