Not that I particularly need anything quick, I ended up going for the boot into Linux then use Mac-on-Linux for any OSX needs. Doesn't solve the ipod connection, but OSX under MOL is more responsive than X on OSX for me. Using a G4 powerbook. Main gripe is lack of audio input (what the hell were they thinking?) but as it's a work machine I'm not really complaining...
