uname -a
Only if 'version of Linux' means he's not interested in what
distribution he's got. If distribution is of interest, he'll also
need to scrabble around looking at /etc/*release trying to decide if
anything there is relevant. Some systems will have multiple files,
and the file content can be just as relevant as the file names.
IMNASHO, when you take the Linux out of any GNU/Linux, what's left is
a dog's breakfast.
