Thanks, Ken.  It's disappointing to see that I appear to be right about
the only way to test a grub configuration is to reboot, and the if
there's a problem see if you can somehow manually prod things back into
action.

I'll persevere with lilo, therefore, but may end up having to
experiment with grub.
