Hmm, I think this misses the point.

(1) I, personally, do not know all of the things that can be present
in /proc/cpuinfo
(2) I, personally, do not know all of the CPUs which gcc supports, let
alone all the CPUs that exist.
(3) I, personally, do not know the mapping from (1) to (2).

By implication, I don't know what Ubuntu considers "686" when building a
kernel image. I'm guessing that it uses gcc definitions, but that is no
help, since I don't know gcc's mapping, either.

Is there a script which can read /proc/info and output a gcc
architecture name? (suitable for use with gcc's -mcpu= option)

Is there a script which can read /proc/info and output an Ubuntu kernel
image meta package name?

Is there a script which can read /proc/info and output an Ubuntu mplayer
package name?
