Let me ask you this question: How many of the old LUGS people, including the
LUGS committee members do you see at SLMG? Zilch.
That is simply untrue.
I sat together with Tom Goh at a joint SLMG/LUGS stand at last years
SFD2008, and saw many other LUGS/SLMG faces (to me it is all the same
group), including most of the LUGS committee members, Harish was the
chair of one of the sessions for the entire day iirc, and I saw
countless other LUGS people including committee members - many who I've
bumped into at the other SLMG meetings i've spoken at or attended over
the last few years.
I think no one is seriously interested in reviving LUGS. Today, for all
practical purposes, the group most active in Linux in SG *IS* SLMG (and next
is Team Ubuntu) and SLMG is growing to collaborate with other OSS groups to
form an umbrella org called FOSA.
The fledgling FOSA has very similar issues to LUGS had the past and I
have spoken to Tom Goh about this and we essentially in agreement here.
I believe so far they have not filled the committee posts due to lack of
people coming forward. FOSA is in exactly the same position as LUGS has
been at past LUGS AGMs.
It is all to easy to blame whoever was willing to take responsibility at
the time, but these people tend to never step forward themselves to be
accountable for one of the committee positions. LUGS exco afterall is
just members who were willing to put themselves forward - sometimes
taking posts because nobody else would volunteer (even if unfortunately
they had overcommitted due to work and family).
I myself have not had the time to do my post of LUGS Vice President
justice. There seems to be a lot of pointless NIH (not invented here)
syndrome here, when LUGS has always been a member-led organisation
looking for volunteers and leadership.
I agree with Tom that there needs to be a reuniting of LUGS and SLMG so
we can present a cohesive image against propretary software. Personal
politics only damage our common cause (and serve to divide our community).
SLMG has to be congratulated for making a great monthly meeting, but I
agree with Tom that we should unite the vibrant physical community
(SLMG) with this vibrant virtual community (LUGS/slugnet).
It seems somewhat strange to me and for others new to Singapore that all
of the local information relating to Linux and Singapore, and one of the
most vibrant Singapore Open Source mailing lists is under the LUGS name,
but the meetings are all held by SLMG. This should be fixed! (well at
least I think so).
I believe there can only be a positive outcome from a united SLMG/LUGS
or LUGS/SLMG, and we will be able to present a much more cohesive image
to those visting Singapore, and searching for the local LUG when visting
your lovely country.
We need to join our efforts not divide them! and pay some respect to
LUGS supporters (unless you don't want people like me contributing).
My 2c.
(or my SG$1000 pledge if you guys are all willing to work together)
