I have had 11 units deployed starting December '02 so I have gone through
all of the latest firmware revisions. I love the latest firmware (except
for the PPPoE error we all waited on). I have never had any problems except
for the locking up issue that was resolved in the 1.50 firmware release. I
have a repeater with 2 clients on it and the rest are all straight to the
AP. I run private static IP addresses for the bridge and public static IP
addresses for the customer. I do think that the thin (26 AWG maybe??) wire
that used to come with the units was a little small to be carrying power but
I have never had an issue with it except when I go over 100'. I have
lightening arrestors on all of my installs wireless side and most of the
powershots are plugged into a UPS unit. This is my first wireless deploy
but I really haven't had any complaints. I've only gotten one flaky bridge
and I order all of mine from electro-comm.. I just ordered one from this
"new" batch but I am going to try it out for a few days before I install it;
and knock on wood since that seems to help....

my $.02 worth.....

My $0.02:

I am in a very similar situation. I use static, no
grounding, 12V power supply provided. I've had APPO, AP
Totals, and ABO units running from 1-8 months, and have
never had any of the strange problems discussed. I have
old and new units, and old and new firmware.

I'm guessing we are dealing with one of several
problems, like DHCP, user error, poor connections, etc.
Maybe it is time for sB to put together a comprehensive
survey and get some data instead of reacting in a
knee-jerk fashion to complaints in this forum.

Just to add my really quick 2 cents.

I have had 30 units online since January...with all
working superbly.
1. I use only static IPs (both sB unit and client
computer on same
subnet)
2. I do not use any grounding.

I am in the process of deploying 30 more (newly
acquired) units. I will
let you know if I run into any problems.

Side Note: I recently put a rule in my firewall that
stops broadcast
pings from my clients. Since then, I have had some
problems with
clients not able to surf the net?? I am thinking...and
I don't know
yet...but I am thinking that the broadcast ping is
needed for the client
to talk to the gateway??? I am always able to ping the
wireless device
and client computer...just the client cant surf the
net. Sounds like a
DNS issue...but it is not. I think it is something
with the pings I am
blocking at the firewall (prior to the gateway).???

I'm just guessing here but my "gut" (and it's getting
pretty big) tells
me
these problems may be related to proper grounding.

Maybe SB could put a grounding lug on the bottom of the
outdoor units...
