If you just want to mess around with it to try it out, Star-OS has a PopTop
server built in. They have a 24 hour demo you can install on any old pc but
I'm not sure if all of the functionality is available in the demo.

I had pptp links up and running in < an hour. I think the hardware
requirements would be pretty steep to keep up with a lot of encrypted
sessions. Haven't done any benchmarking to see what it would take and I
haven't been able to find any on the net either. I also haven't had time to
try it with SB's on the client side either. I'd be interested if anyone
else has.
