The way I do it is a DC-DC converter that runs on 9-18 vdc and outputs 5 vdc and 12 vdc at 2 amps. Expensive tho...$120.00
This way on a long run, I use 12 Ga. romex for the 12 vdc at one end (usually a battery charged by solar power) and one of these DC-DC converters. The 12 vdc output of the converter then is clean and runs the APPO fine. Oh BTW the setup is 2 APPO's back to back, one on omni and one for a link back to shop.(Repeater) If I have a client at the same location i put a 4 port hub in and run an ethernet cable to him. Or I have customer use a USB or PCMCIA 802.11 card to connect to repeater.

You can go 100 meters (max ethernet spec) but you MUST have a 15-18vDC @ 1A
minimum for that length. If you have a volt meter you should read 5vdc or
more at the airPoint. If you don't read anything then you have a bad
connection somewhere. Even with a 12v power supply you should read around
10v with no load and ~1v with the unit connected. Using 100 meters of Cat5
26awg wire with 18vdc power supply and unit running at full load of .5A you
will only have 6v left at the end.

I would say it's a power issue over anything else. I guess it wouldn't
hurt to put new RJ45 ends on to see if that fixes your problem before
you go by the power supply. But 100 meters is just to far for 12V

I can shorten the cable a bit if necessary but just want to see power up
there for now -

Is 18V a MUST or could there be something else wrong?

Cheers

Make sure if you get one at Radio Shack that it outputs DC voltage and
not
AC. I bought one there without paying attention, and it was VAC. Also
you'll need to buy an adaptor to make sure it will fit into the
powershot.
(You should probably take the powershot with you to the store.)
