I agree its not for every situation but don't disregard it as a very helpful addition to sectors and some omni's. We used to go nuts before we really learned wifi putting up 6 watt amps on our wireless equip LOL now we stick to 250's and 500's where needed. Our competitor uses 24db grids for links that are less than a kilometer and I believe he has 500mw amps on his radio's as well, but hey more power to him :)

I mentioned earlier that amps should only be used on omnis in special
circumstances. This may be one. Just be ready for a fair amount of
packet loss on the AP uplink side. But in a lightly used system that is
not too big an issue. Unless you are in a noisy area, then you will only
see about 5Kb upload rate on a good day. At a conference recently I was
talking to a guy who bought a system from a reseller in Florida, a Ap-1000
hooked to a 15dB omni and an amp. This was to be set up in a heavily
populated area in east LA. He was wondering why he was getting 140Kb
download but only about 5Kb upload. It's because only about 5% of his
packets were getting received by his AP. The omni and amp was looking at
everything from every direction. No wonder he couldn't see any upload
speeds. So if you are in East LA don't even think about it. Perhaps a
very rural area it might be ok.
