I agree. If you are looking to reduce cost, as you indicated, forget
about inverting (small inverters and AC-DC converters are terrible
inefficient).

A couple of other notes: 
- be sure to properly fuse everything.
- don't undersize batteries or PV
- in addition to others mentioned in this thread, check out
http://windsun.com. Prices and service are great.
