What kind of system is it?  

The reason I ask is that the BIOS in my HP MicroServer is a pain in the
neck when set to boot from USB.  If you plug a "new" USB device in (you
can trigger this simply by unplugging then re-plugging any USB disk),
it adjusts the boot order so that on the next boot it will try to boot
from that disk.
