Slightly off-topic, but still vaguely on-topic:

If you prefer your config management tool to be Python based, there's also SaltStack. The developers here like it because it works well with their Django applications. Since I wanted them to put everything in SmartOS zones, I did a bunch of work to make
it easy to run Salt on SmartOS.

The result is a so-called "Esky" build of SaltStack similar to a Chef "Omnibus" build. I generate a tarball that you can extract pretty much anywhere you want that has zero dependencies on the pkgsrc tree.

I have an old blog post about it here:
http://blog.shalman.org/getting-started-with-saltstack-in-the-joyent-cloud/
And I publish the builds to Manta. I publish an index page here:
http://www.shalman.org/salt/
And the latest tarball is here:

is ruby bloat worse than the python prerequisite for ansible? just curious, python is one of the main reasons i'm interested in ansible. i know very little about ruby.

i'd love to see any playbook you're willing to share, even if it's imperfect. i'm still just trying to learn.

I just started using it for smartmachines simply on the basis that
there's shorter time between provisioning to config mgmt running.
The Ruby bloat to get Chef kicked off was simply a killer, as much
as I love the chef ecosystem.

I'll likely have things to share when I get to refining it more,
but so far it's gone smoothly.

what kinds of things are you doing with it?
