Hi, I think SDC and FIFO are just incompatible with each other: They are two different ways to orchestrate a farm of SmartOS servers.
SmartOS was free and opensource , SDC was not, so FIFO was created as an alternative to SDC. -FIFO runs on top of SmartOS, SDC includes SmartOS completely (net booting of compute nodes, etc…). I think SmartOS behaves differently when running as a SDC node. - SDC will probably be more complete than FIFO in analytics, customer portals, billing and some other stuff. - Joyent’s images will be better provisioned with SDC (mysql & postgres admin password generation, ssh key transmission,…) -I found that FIFO copes better when you fiddle in SmartOS command line. -If you already have SmartOS servers running , FIFO can be installed as an afterthought. SDC has to be planned from the beginning. At this time I’m running 2 SmartOS servers with about 15 VMs. I like the flexibility of SmartOS Command Line Interface, so I mainly use that. I installed FIFO, and it shows my 2 servers and their VM running. I use it sometimes for a quick look, but I prefer to create and manage my VMs in CLI for its flexibility. If your planning to have more than 2 servers, of course FIFO or SDC are a must. Both FIFO and SDC architectures are a bit complex, with a lots of different components to make it work. But looking at OpenStack, FIFO and SDC look quite simple… Michel On 08 Nov 2014, at 12:23, Nguyen Duy Kien via smartos-discuss <[email protected]> wrote: > Great!
